Best Man Wedding Speech Do’s and Don’ts

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Leroy Chan Here are a few common sense rules for writing and giving a best man wedding speech or toast. Let them be a mini-guide to help you gain control over the outcome of your toast. Don’t Wait Until the Last Moment Writing a best man toast isn’t always as easy as it seems. You’ll stress yourself unnecessarily if you think you can write a toast the night before the wedding but instead experience writer’s block. Don’t Tell Bad Jokes We expect toasts to have a joke or two, but everyone has different tastes. Try not to say anything that would offend the couple or guests. If a joke bombs, it makes you look bad. Don’t Ramble On Assume your audience has a short attention span and will tune you out if you don’t make your point right away. Stick with things that are relevant about the bride or groom. Don’t Be Drunk A little alcohol may loosen up some inhibitions, but too much will make you look like a fool. If you had prepared well for the speech beforehand, too much celebrating may have destroyed any chance of delivering the speech that might have been perfect. Do Be Prepared The more time you give yourself to plan, write and practice the wedding speech, the better your performance will be at the wedding party. Do Ask For Feedback Allow a friend to hear your speech and ask for constructive feedback. Re-write your speech and recite it aloud again until your friend thinks you got it right. Do Be Yourself Write and speak from your heart. Allow your personality to blossom from your speech. Being natural will make giving the wedding speech easier. Let the guest enjoy your uniqueness and they will appreciate your speech even more. Do Enjoy Yourself It’s uncomfortable to see and hear a nervous speaker. Everyone, including the speaker wants it to end. If you look like you enjoy being the best man and giving the toast, then everyone else will be at ease and enjoy listening. Try to have a little fun; after all, it is a wedding party. Final Thought You will be giving the best man toasts. You’ll never forget this life event. Make the most of it by putting 100% of yourself into it. You’ll never regret doing it if you do everything right. Marketing Myth #2: It Is Not Important To Know What You Don’t Know

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Mary Eule This is the most pervasive, far-reaching and detrimental marketing myth of them all! It is an equal-opportunity fantasy whose believers are corporate CEOs; entrepreneurs; male and female; young and old; rich and poor; tall and short; moms and pops; etc. It is also the most difficult one to correct because the patient doesnt know he/she is ill! It serves as the foundation for prejudice, ignorance and failure and influences all of the sufferers decisions and behaviors personally and professionally. Ironically, this myth often serves as the very basis for becoming an entrepreneur in the first place. Michael Gerber, in his classic book, The E-Myth, says that most small businesses are started by technicians (folks who are proficient at some skill) who have an entrepreneurial seizure. Just because they know how to do the work of the business does not mean that they know how to run a business that does that work. For example, just because a hair stylist knows how to cut hair, does not mean he/she can run a hair styling business. This is a classic case of not knowing what you dont know. For instance, any business run in the U.S. today has to understand how the following business requirements (just to name a few) impact them and how they must comply on a daily/monthly/yearly basis: Payroll taxes Workmens compensation Local and State Income Tax Laws Local and State Sales Tax Laws Business Licensing Profit and Loss Statements Overhead Expenses Financial Reporting Requirements Employee Management Human Resource Regulations OSHA Regulations Social Security, Medicare Benefits Withholding Taxes Actual costs of running a business Quarterly Tax Payments The problem arises when technicians assume that all they need to know is the work of the business, not how to run a business. The actual costs of owning and operating your own company are far greater than the expenses associated with your rent, office furniture, utilities, etc. Because of this many small business owners never earn a true profitone that allows their business to grow, and provide them sufficient income to enjoy the lifestyle they envisioned when they began. Essentially, theyve traded one job for another. Before they collected a paycheck, now they must earn a profit the two are not the same. They are responsible for paying themselves and well as all of their other business partners federal, state, city, and local governments; city municipalities; employees; suppliers, etc. Herein lays the trap Most entrepreneurs do not know what they dont know and go into their business thinking Im the best widget maker; therefore my business is bound to be successful! Statistics say otherwise. (To learn more about Michael Gerbers E-Myth theories visit his website at: www.emyth.com). The person who knows HOW will always have a job. The person who knows WHY will always be his boss. Alanis Morissette Then there are a group of people that I call know-it-alls . The business world is full of these people, and unfortunately they are their own worst enemies. Why? There are a myriad of specific reasons but they all begin with their reluctance and/or refusal to seek wise counsel. Essentially, they do not believe that its smart business to pay experts for their years of study, experience and expertise. For instance, just because they can write their own ad copy (i.e. it doesnt require a license or certificate) they think they should! These are the very same folks who would diagnose their own diseases and write their own prescriptions if it werent against the law! What they fail to see is that for every one dollar they spend paying experts, they potentially save five dollars in actual money and even more in wasted time; preventable mistakes; lost earnings and stress. However, marketing is not the only area these misguided know-it-alls reside. Although the industry certainly has more than its fair share (even though study after study confirms that a company is only as successful as its weakest skill) it is prevalent in every field. On the other hand, there are many more folks who are far from insufferable know-it-alls. They actively seek counsel, but sometimes simply dont know where to begin, who to contact or the right questions to ask! I experienced this firsthand as I began working on my website, (www.StrategicMarketingAdvisors.com). Tip I had no delusions that I was an expert in Internet marketing right from the start no problem. Yet, as I learned more about the process, I became more and more panicked. Cyberspace jargon is like a foreign language to me and the more I tried to do myself, the more lost I became. And it wasnt as though I did want the help! Quite the contrary but I was so lost that I didnt even understand what I really needed, let alone who to contact! Gratefully, I used my tried-and-true methodology and baby-steps process and found a wonderful coach who made all the difference! The philosophical concept is not difficult to grasp but identifying our own level of incompetence is another story all together. Like most things it begins with an open mind and heart; insatiable curiosity; careful research and a very large mirror! And what makes it even more challenging is the opposite fact There are many marketing strategies and tactics that even a beginner can use successfully. Im not suggesting that you hire an expert for everything! However, you must first learn one from the other. Its like trying to save a few bucks by changing your cars oil yourself Now this is not an overly complex task, and one even I can manage. But is it a smart thing to do? Think about whats involved you drive to the store; wait in line; ask questions; look at the merchandise; select the oil, pan, funnel; wait in line to check-out; pay the cashier $24.97; drive back home; try to jack up the car so you can get underneath it to put the pan in place; undo the screw; get some oil in the pan; get most of the oil on you; get the funnel and fill it with the new oil; figure out what to do with the old oil; close everything down; throw your oil-laden shirt in the trash; and take a shower. The cost? $24.97 in stuff; $1.32 in gas; $25.00 ruined shirt; 3.25 hours of your time; and $1,000,000 in frustration All this, when you could have had it done for you for $25.00!! Lesson learned: Know whats best left in the hands of professionals. Low cost is not always best cost! Oh, and by the way, never try to hang your own drywall either! Trust me on this one. However, there are times when doing it yourself is smart! If youve got better than average computer skills or design talents its easy to create things like business cards, letterhead and bill stuffers but please, unless youre an ad buyer by trade, do not buy, book or design any media (especially TV and radio) by yourself! But more about that later Classic Symptoms of a Myth #2 Believer They Dont have a marketing plan because their business, organization, industry, product, service, customers, location, you-name-it is different than anyone elses and they just dont need it Never seek out wise counsel on most things, more particularly relating to marketing insights Make facts fit beliefs Base decisions on broad assumptions which may not be true Never start with their customers needs because theyve never taken the time to find out what they are Conduct little, or no, research on customers, competition, and their marketplace Believe that all customers are worth getting, and all are worth keeping Dont differentiate they dont understand why very ordinary is very bad Latch onto a cool product without understanding the marketplace first Buy media from salespeople Think people need to be sold (No one wants to be sold anything but everyone loves to buy something) Reinvent the wheel Dont know how, or refuse to, borrow success from others Copyright 2005 Mary Eule Mary Eule specializes in helping small and medium-sized businesses get and keep profitable customers. Know your Man: Being a Provider

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Maria Moratto The man has the gradually sinking feeling that his role as provider, the definitive male activity from the primal days of the hunt through the industrial revolution and on into modern life, has been largely seized from him; he has been cuckolded by it.” ~ George Gilder Men feel fulfilled when they work. It makes them feel good to be able to provide for their loved ones. Working makes us feel productive and self-confident, among other things, but we shouldnt deny them the satisfaction of being the familys breadwinner, if it is important to them. It is part of their make-up. For a year, I lived in the woods in upstate New York with my son, who was 7 at the time. I used to call our house the Little Ridding Red Hood Cabin, it was so far removed from civilization. One day, my then boyfriend decided to spend a whole Saturday collecting wood for my woodstove. He worked very hard all day and as a result of his hard work, I had tons of little bundles of kindling wood, to start my fire in the winter. He was exhausted but he had this incredible felling of accomplishment at the end of the day. He said: It makes me feel good to provide for you. There. I rest my case. And, by the way, those little bundles came in really handy. Even though he never knew this for he soon vanished from our lives (indeed a blessing), I never ceased to appreciate him for doing such great service for me and my son. It was a indeed a great help. A Word of Advice: Ladies: Lets not deny them the satisfaction of being the major provider, even if they make less than we do. This is a pride kind of thing and they will lavish us with their gratitude. Gents: Feel good and proud that you are providing for your family, no matter what criticism you may receive. Nobody can take this great feeling away from you. Maria Moratto 2006 Want to have more abundance, health, time, love, fun, and blessings? Overweight? Watch Out!

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Gang Deng A new study shows that being overweight in mid-life substantially increased the risk of dying of heart disease later when they get older. This finding is based on a research by Northwestern University as result of tracking 17,643 patients for 3 decades. Even people with healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels when the study began are not safer. Overweight people are more likely to have heart disease, as they are more likely to have a higher blood pressure and cholesterol. Both hike the risk of heart disease. Statistics shows obesity can cause heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. So if your weight is above normal level, you need to shed a few pounds for the sake of your health. How do you know for sure if you are overweight or not? You can tell that by your Body Mass Index, BMI for short. Generally speaking, a person whose BMI index is above 25 is considered overweight. BMI Weight StatusBelow 18.5 Underweight 18.5 24.9 Normal 25.0 29.9 Overweight 30.0 and Above Obese You can calculate your BMI by the following formula: English Formula BMI= weight in pounds/(height in inches x height in inches) x 703 Metric Formula BMI= weight in kilograms/(height in meters x height in meters) Even if you dont quite mind being overweight, its better to keep your weight at normal level for your health. Compost Bins - Take Care When Handling Compost, Follow These Handy Compost Tips

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Al Paterson Many gardeners already know the value of the rich, dark, earthy material created by composting. It is one of the best mulches and richest fertilizers - and it’s cheap. In fact, you can make it for free. It works by providing food for microorganisms and these microorganisms produce nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus naturally for the soil, improving soil fertility. Apart from being good for the environment, composting is also economically sensible, helping to reduce the pressure on landfills which, once full, pose problems for local government. It is not easy finding new sites for landfills. Did you know that almost half of the average rubbish bag can be composted and most is not? Given our environmental pressures this does not make sense. Worse still, when it comes to landfills garden waste and kitchen scraps break down into methane, a potentially explosive greenhouse gas, and leachate which can pollute our water. This is why composting - and recycling in a garden compost bin - is such a good thing to do for our environment. However, if you are handling compost, you need to take some basic health and safety precautions. Garden compost contains various living organisms. On rare occasions, these have been associated with illness and allergies in humans particularly people with compromised immune systems or respiratory illness. And because of this, it is important to always: 1. Wash your hands after handling compost. Compost contains bacteria and this can react with your skin. 2. Wear proper protective gloves at all times, and especially if your skin is broken or if the garden compost is hot). 3. Avoid working with compost in confined spaces. 4. Keep your compost moist to prevent spores and dust flying in your face. (And it helps keep the bacteria composting because bacteria stops when it gets too dry.) 5. Wear a face mask. Alan Paterson is the Managing Director of Compost Oven Pty Ltd, Australia’s leading supplier of hot composting solutions. Do the right thing by the environment and talk to us about compost bins today. Her Wedding Day In Her Perfect Wedding Dress

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Thomas Fite As she patiently awaits for her queue to step through the doors into the isle where every single person in the building is half turned to the side, equally excited to see the bride emerge as she is to make the last walk of her single life, the bride is ready and waiting in her beautiful wedding gown. As the infamous music begins to play, she begins to walk. The audience gasps at her beauty as she makes her way to the love of her life awaiting his bride at the front of the room. Everything is perfect, the flowers, music, brides maids, and her soon to be husband standing in front of her. Her father gives away his little girl, and the ceremony commences. Each person has their personal favorite part in a wedding but one of the most memorable and possibly most talked about is the brides dress. It has always been tradition to wear white, even though some brides choose alternate colors. These days, some brides often venture outside of tradition and wear something that is not so standard such as tea stained dresses or other alternate colors. Sometimes brides choose to wear a gown that fits their personality or hobby such as bikers and gothic for example. The fact of the matter is that a brides dress is extremely important and more often than not ends up being passed down to later generations. Therefore, it must be perfect! Thomas Fite is well educated in wedding ceremonies and has overseen many of them for friends and part time work. Reading the Beach: A Necessary Skill

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Muhammad Ismail The ability to Read the Beach is a skill that takes a lifetime to perfect. It is however a necessary skill to acquire as it effectively informs us where to place our bait and increases our chances of catching a fish. The ability to read the beach allows us to identify sloughs, highways, gutters and currents just by viewing the wave action. Tidal action, currents and the wind cause forces that push bodies of water towards the shore forming waves along the way. The waves push upwards as it passes over sand bars. Sand Bars are bodies of sand that are not fixed and run along the sea shore. Just as sand dunes are affected by the wind, sand bars are affected by the action of the water. The landscape under the water is more or less similar to the beach associated with it. Notice the landscape while standing on the shoreline with your back facing the sea. In most cases the landscape of the seabed will be similar. Looking out to sea you will notice that the swell is more or less constant. As you scan closer to shore you will find that the swell becomes higher and waves begin to form. Do not follow the waves to shore just yet. Zoom in to this area and you will notice that waves are constantly being formed in that particular spot. Okay, now start focusing to the right and left and you will find that the first wave is being formed at a similar distance all along the beach. This allows us to draw a mental picture of the sand bar pushing up the swell that forms the first wave. Now follow the first wave to the next swell and you will find the next sand bar running along the beach. You may find three or more sand bars. The seabed in between the sand bars are the lower points of the shoreline and are called the Highways. The location of the sand bars remain the same only for a day or two. They are changing constantly depending on the forces exerted on them by tidal and wave action. The only constant is that as long as there are waves there are sand bars. Thus far we have learned that water moves towards the shore forming waves as it passes over sand bars. We notice that this water travels towards the seashore but we cannot see the water return to the ocean. No waves are formed facing the opposite direction. This is because water arrives on the surface and returns to the ocean along the sea bed causing a current commonly called the backwash or rip currents. The strong force of the backwash literary rips through weak points in the sand bars forming drains or gutters. At this stage, just by looking out to sea, we are able to isolate the number of sand bars and their shapes allowing us to pinpoint the highways inbetween. We also know that the rip currents break the sand bars at their weakest points. Identifying the gutters are also very important. All we have to do is to take a closer look at the swell as it forms the first wave rolling over breaking into the highway. Scanning along this line you will find areas where the waves are not breaking but remain a mere swell. These are the gutters and drains. Since the sand bars are washed away at these points, there is nothing to push the swell up to cause the wave. The highways between the sand bars offer predatory fish a safe passage while on the lookout for food. Like any predator, its survival factor lies in the efficiency of the hunt. These predators or as we fishermen call them Game Fish lie in wait at the intersections were the backwash cuts the sand bars. The rip currents wash little fish and other food practically into the jaws of the gamefish which lay in ambush at these points. Muhammad Ismail is a simple South African who is passionate about fishing. If We Are Eating 99% Fat Free, Why Are We 99% Fat?!

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Sheridan Woodcroft Unfortunately, obesity is reaching epidemic proportions, with over 60% of our population now overweight. We need to take control of this problem NOW. There are three terms that need to be understood in order to take control of your weight - fat, fibre, and carbohydrates. Fat is fairly straight forward. Fibre is anything that grows out of the ground mainly fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and berries. The important thing to know about fibre is that the acid in your stomach wont break it down, so when you eat fibre, it fills you up faster and keeps you full longer. Finally, Carbohydrates are foods that are naturally sweet, or anything made with sugar or flour. Most people have heard that if you eat low fat or no fat foods you can lose weight. Well in reality, thats just half the story. Most people, when trying low fat diets, go to the store and start reading labels and looking for anything that has zero fat. People then think, Great, I can eat all I want. They eat almost no fat at all - and end up gaining weight! Thats why you need to know the other half of the story. If you eat only low fat foods, most of them are low in fibre and also very high in carbohydrates. Because theyre low in fibre you have to eat more to feel full. So when you eat more, you take in more calories than you need, and your body stores the extra carbohydrates and calories as fat. Thats the other side of the low fat diet. Unless you eat low fat and high fibre, at the same time, you are more likely to gain than lose any weight. Plantar Wart Home Remedies

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Sam Chandler Have you ever had a plantar wart that wouldn’t go away? No matter what over the counter products you tried or doctors prescription you applied that darn plantar wart wouldn’t go away? No matter what plantar wart home remedies you used that wart stuck around and caused you pain? Well, let me tell you a little story about my younger brother Joey. When my brother Joey was seventeen he was the all around sports hero of the local high school. There wasn’t a sport that he didn’t master. His favorite sport was football. And he was the all-star quarterback. During football season Joey got a plantar wart on the bottom of his left foot. It was big and it was ugly and it was painful. You could tell how painful it was just by watching Joey walk. You could see the grimace on his face. Try playing football in that condition. Joey was a tough kid and never complained about the pain the plantar wart caused him. He still played football but he wasn’t as mobile or agile as he use to be. We started with the over the counter plantar wart products. We applied these products religiously per the instructions but they didn’t work. Then Joey went to the doctor and the doctor gave him a prescription and we applied the prescription per the instructions and this also didn’t work. It seemed like the plantar wart was getting worse and more painful. Then one day my Grandma came to visit. My Grandma had grown up on a farm and she always had a home remedy for anything that ailed you. When my Grandma found out about Joey’s plantar wart she took over his treatments as only a Grandma can. She had a list of plantar wart home remedies and the first one she tried on Joey was baking soda and water. She rubbed Joey’s wart 3 times daily in a mixture of baking soda and water. That was just for beginners. Next she used dandelions. She broke open the stem of the dandelion and used the milky sap to rub on the wart 3 times daily as well. Then she used wood ash. She rubbed the wood ash into the wart daily. Weeks later when my Grandpa came to pick my Grandma up the plantar wart was still there and still quite painful. When my Grandpa heard about Joey’s plantar wart 2 words came immediately to his mouth and those two words were - duct tape. My Grandpa went to the trunk of his car and in a tool box he took out a roll of duct tape. He told Joey to cover the wart with duct tape and leave on around the clock for three weeks, removing only to change the tape. A month later Joey no longer had the wart. I’m not sure if it was my Grandma’s plantar wart home remedies or if it was my Grandpa’s idea of using duct tape that made the wart go away. All I know is that Joey was back to his old self.
